ASUS Announces Corporate Transformation to Achieve Leading Position in AIoT and Gaming
Taipei, Taiwan, December 13, 2018 —
ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih today announced that ASUS will enact a comprehensive corporate transformation with the goal of becoming a global leader in the AIoT and gaming industries. Mr. Shih made the announcement at a press event held at ASUS headquarters in Taipei following a meeting of the Board of Directors, which passed three resolutions establishing a new corporate direction and steps to achieve it.
The first resolution establishes a new long-term strategy for AIoT investment with the goal of becoming a global leader in AIoT within three years. To spearhead this strategic transformation, ASUS CEO Jerry Shen will transition to a new position as Chairman and CEO of iFast, a new AIoT venture that will receive investment from ASUS. “To speed up the transformation of the company as well as to realize my personal aspiration for entrepreneurship, I will resign my position as ASUS CEO and devote myself to assisting ASUS effectively transition into the AIoT industry,” said Mr. Shen. “I will also invest in iFast, which will focus on developing B2B applications for the AIoT industry, and serve as its Chairman and CEO.”
“Mr. Shen’s contributions to ASUS over the past 25 years have been vital to the company’s continued success,” said Mr. Shih. “I am confident that his passion for the technology industry and persistence in achieving his vision will bring prosperity in his new role. The Board of Directors has therefore passed a resolution to invest 30% in the new venture.”
The second resolution for the ASUS corporate transformation establishes a co-CEO structure and appoints S.Y. Hsu and Samson Hu to serve as co-CEOs, effective January 1, 2019. Announcing the new leadership, Mr. Shih said, “From the beginning of this year, ASUS has gradually phased in a collective leadership management structure, which applies the expertise of the executive team where they can be used most effectively. Mr. Hsu and Mr. Hu both possess extensive technical expertise and corporate management experience and share a natural chemistry for collaboration. Their joint leadership will foster the creativity and seamless execution that are critical to achieving our grander vision.”
The third corporate resolution is for a transformation of the ASUS smartphone business, which will focus on perfecting solutions for gamers and power users, a return to the ASUS brand essence of creating the most powerful, beautiful and highest quality products. Due to this strategic shift in market segment, ASUS listed a one-time loss of NT$6 billion, which includes loss of inventory, royalties, production costs and organizational adjustment expenses. ASUS aims to develop and further expand the market of gaming smartphones, fostering the development of new gaming product lines and becoming a leader in providing total gaming solutions.
